Why are anti-oxidants so important?
The antioxidant story begins with free radicals. A free radical is a molecule that has become highly reactive and destructive due to contact with outside stimuli such as sunlight, pollution, smog, stress, lack of sleep...I know, I know these times in which we are living. In an effort to find stability, free radicals steal an oxygen electron from a molecule in a nearby cell. Allowed to go on their merry way, free radicals damage cells and interfere with their normal functioning. Once a cell is damaged and not repaired, it can die or reproduce incorrectly. This process leads to very familiar signs of aging: wrinkles, uneven skin tone and loss of moisture.
The good news is that antioxidants can neutralize free radicals. Antioxidants are the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other organic substances that help stop free radicals before they do their harm. Growing evidence suggests that antioxidants have the ability not only to minimize signs of aging, but also to prevent them. Even more scientific lingo for my hard core long term clients is Spin Trap....Spin Trap is better than antioxidants. Why?
Antioxidants DESTRUCTIVELY deal with free radicals. Spin Trap CONSTRUCTIVELY deals with them. Antioxidants chemically react with free radicals to convert the rogue oxygen (reactive oxygen species) into water (which the body has plenty of anyway.) Spin Trap captures these wayward oxygen species and plugs them back into their intended goal of tissue respiration.
Free radicals are normal oxygen-bearing units that wander off their intended paths of usefulness. They contain vital oxygen for the deepest tissue which is most vulnerable to hypoxia, i.e. low oxygen conditions. Antioxidants can contribute to hypoxia by indiscriminately converting oxygen to water. Oxygen is breathable everywhere in the body. Water is not breathable anywhere (unless you're a fish). Antioxidants are not bad. They are good, but Spin Trap is better. Too much antioxidants are bad. The more Spin Trap, the better.
Our Homecare Lines including Dermaware and Rhonda Allison Skincare are both cutting edge when it comes to enzymes, peels and anti-oxidants (better yet Spin Trap)......that is where we get our "innovative" type of skincare from here at the Bellewood Spa...science.
